Work:Play

Searching for new routes (photo InsideTheLens)

After a slow start to Spring the Highlands of Scotland had a long period of dry and unseasonably hot weather. For the best part of a month the North West was the warmest place in the United Kingdom, which in turn meant a busy period of work on Skye’s infamous Cuillin Ridge. I was thankful my clients had great weather for their adventures, although somewhat bitter-sweet as I had little time for personal rock climbing; something that has unfortunately become a trend this summer. However, after a long stint of inactivity last year I knew I had to make up the financial deficit, the balance will definitely swing back in favour of ‘play’ rather than work next year.

Typically my free days have not coincided with a good forecast either so the new local climbing wall in Fort William has been put to good use. Over the years I haven’t been involved with indoor climbing but know the benefits of getting stronger by training indoors. There is no doubt this local training facility will improve my climbing for the forthcoming winter season.

I have also travelled a little further in search of dry rock and been to new and old favourites such as Ring Crags at Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Duntelchaig near Inverness and the South Wall of Garbh-Bheinn. The local crags of Glen Nevis have also been frequented where I have cleaned three potential new routes; now all I need is that magical moment where weather, time off and willing belayer all come together!

August brings a departure to the Alps where I am meeting up with friends for some personal Alpine climbing. The conditions in Europe have been improving steadily over the last few weeks and given our flexibility to move around this year we will hopefully gain success on some of our more ambitious objectives.
