Pastures New

After a great six months in Aviemore working as the social media whizz kid at Wilderness Scotland and having a great time in the mountains I was swooped off my feet and shipped down to Dundee to start a PhD as part of the Design in Action project – which as some of the designers out there will know is going to make a big difference for us poor creative’s trying to make our way in the world!

Getting back to the big smoke has been a bit of a culture shock and I’ve been struggling to readjust, I have to admit I left Aviemore kicking and screaming – but I’ve still managed to squeeze some fun stuff in-between my new studies – here’s a bit of a round up of what I’ve been up to during the past couple of months.

Once all the boring house moving stuff was out of the way, I decided I needed a bit of a break and headed over to the ecoYoga centre on the west coast of Scotland, which was so awesome!  It’s a completely self sufficient eco lodge in the most amazing, remote setting where you can chill in the hot tub under the stars and have a wild river bath right beside a secluded waterfall while sipping on a glass of champers – it was such an unforgettable and unique experience – more like something you would find in Thailand than in Scotland!

Since then, I have actually started training as a yoga teacher – it was something I always wanted to do and when I was struck down with Lyme Disease earlier this year I started doing much more yoga as it kept me in shape without completely draining me of every last drop of energy, I got totally hooked and decided to start the course.  I’m not sure if it’s still ‘cool’ to be a yoga bunny, but this would really sort the men from the boys – it’s one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done – both mentally and physically, and I just can’t wait to get out to some far flung places and be bending myself into funny shapes in some stunning locations!

I took my first foray into winter climbing and after the first flutter of snow headed into the Cairngorms to sample a few of the easier routes – even in 60mph winds and pretty chilly conditions I had the best climbing experience of my life!  I am completely smitten and have ice axes and crampons at the very top of my Christmas list – looking forward to ticking off some more routes, and perhaps even trying some ice climbing later on in the season – watch this space!

The most fashionable thing I’ve done in a while, and perhaps all year – spending so much time in the wilderness definitely has it’s downsides – was afternoon tea at the Missoni Hotel in Edinburgh, with a surprise fashion show from Edinburgh-based, Scandinavian boutique, K by Kakao – I’ve definitely missed being immersed in beautiful fabrics, pure luxury and city opulence!
