The National Cyclo Cross Championships was held in Bradford this year.
I arrived on Friday evening ready for the race the next day. When I woke on Saturday I felt confident about the day and, after a good breakfast, set off for Peel Park nice and early. I got the bikes ready, had a good practise of the course and then had a bit of time to watch the earlier races.
I did a good warm up before the race and was getting really excited as this was the first big race wearing my new WXC World Racing kit. We lined up on a hill start and I did not get off too well but I started to make up time on the hills. The conditions suited me well as the mud was quite hard. By lap two I was leading and was being chased hard by all the leading medal contenders with Abby Mae Parkinson, the defending champion, at the head of the pack. Abby Mae managed to bridge the gap to me on her own then managed to open a small gap crossing the line a mere 9 seconds in front and retaining the champion’s jersey for another year.
This was a good end to the cyclo cross season with a silver medal adding to my gold in the South Eastern Champs, and a fantastic start with my new team, WXC World Racing. I am now looking forward to mountain biking in the coming months.
