Azores Eurosurf 2013

After a warm summer of poor waves, where I spent most of the time in a sweaty kitchen, I was sure to be excited about selection of the English team trip to the Azores for the 2013 Eurosurf competition! If that excitement to escape Croyde for a few days wasn’t enough, coupled with having a great team this year and a faultless team manager/coach Dave Renaud was.

As a competitor we had very little to worry about other than surfing and enjoying the Island, and it did not disappoint! For a small set of volcanic islands set in the middle of the Atlantic there is a hell of a lot to do; hot spas, whale watching, fishing, diving, mountain biking, hiking, and of course surfing!

The competition site felt a bit like Croyde, a challenging wave on a longboard at times but very rewarding as well, offering fast and powerful waves even on the bad days. Most of the Longboard category was held in the worst conditions of the comp, but did this not matter too much! The competition was tough, and the amount of standouts in the water was hard to paint a picture of!

I surfed within myself my first couple of heats, trying to find a rhythm, this proved to be a good strategy in the challenging conditions, with the aim needing to be completing set waves that were hard to come by… I ended up bowing down in 7th which I was happy with but know it can be improved on!

As a team we finished 6th behind Morocco, it was a great place, great event, and another great experience.
